"The Story"

How he had got there he didnt really know. It was beautiful though. He appeared to be on top of some sort of mountain. It seemed to him that, judging by the trees and the climate, it was autumn. The trees were a multicolored work of art, filled with bright oranges, pale yellows, and pastel greens. The panorama was unlike any he had ever seen. Off in the distance he could see a City. It was more marvelous than a postcard. Many tall buildings and many short buildings made up the City, all of which together in perfect harmony seemed to be one single, perfect building. There was happy, festive music coming from somewhere within the City. It sounded like a party. He belonged there. He just knew he belonged in that city. He didnt know how he knew, but he did. It was a profound mystery, but it seemed more like a dream. He saw many people passing him by, but none of them seemed to pay any attention to him. Besides the occasional glance, no one ever even seemed to notice him. They were all following different roads that all seemed to go to the same final destination, the city.

He stood up and stretched. His legs knew how to walk, but his mind had no idea of how it was done. Legs aching and stiff, he walked along slowly at first. The only doubt as to anything in his mind was which road to take. He knew his name somehow; it was Daniel. He knew his home was in the city. The only thing that bothered him was which way to go. They all seemed to go to the same place, but he wasnt so sure they did. He feared that he could take the wrong path if he wasnt careful, so he sat and stared a while, trying to contemplate in his mind the best possible solution to this disturbing problem. He longed to be in the City, much like a deer longs for water. When he had thought clearly, the answer came to him very plainly. The path that most of the other people were going down had to be the easiest and the best. The path on the left was very wide and had been distinctly walked on by many people. Besides the fact that more had taken it, the path on the left looked much easier and much more pleasant. Along side the path at the right there was a stream that flowed with crystal-clear, cool water.

The road down had many curves, all of which had some new type of thing to be discovered around each. He started down the path with a sense of energy and excitement. He was on his way home. As he walked along he stopped in small cottages and taverns where people were. It was the most fun he had ever had. People were eating and drinking and just forgetting about everything but themselves. The only problem about this was that it had taken his attention off of his goal. He stopped looking forward to going to the city. He very seldom ever looked up at it or would pay any attention to the beautiful music coming from it. His attention was on having fun.

Every day was the same. He would get up and walk from the place he had spent the night to a new cottage or tavern where he could enjoy eating, drinking, and being merry. His life was a constant pattern, until one morning, while he was on the way to the next tavern along the road, something strange happened. Someone actually stopped him and talked to him. It was a new, unfamiliar feeling, but he liked it. He knew that at least someone really cared. The Man who stopped to talk with him was perfect. There were no other words to depict him with. He had golden brown skin with jet black hair. His face was the most loving, and most caring of any he had seen. The Mans eyes were so deep that he was scared to even look into them, fearing that he would get lost in them like a man would get lost if he strayed off the path. He was in awe of this Man, and was amazed that he would stop just to talk to him, a lonely poor man who went from cottage to cottage, doing nothing but pleasing himself.

"Daniel," the Man said with extraordinary radiance. He knew his name. It was a miracle, but Daniel wasnt really surprised that the Man knew it.
"Im sorry to tell you Daniel, but you have been on the wrong path. If you want to end up in the City, you must follow the other path. It is harder, but it is the only one that leads to the City."

Daniel was embarrassed. He had totally forgotten about the City. In all of his fun, he had just lapsed from consciousness of what he should have been doing. He didnt know what to say to the Man, so he just watched Him and listened intently for His next words.

"I have a map for you. It shows you how to get to the City safely. The path here looks all right, but it isnt. The owner of this mountain was banished from the city when he tried to take it over. He doesnt want anyone to make it to the City since he cant go there, so he tries to kill them or to at least divert them from off the path. The Owner of the City has sent Me to show people the right way to the City. He loves everyone on the mountain, and He wants everyone to come and live in His glorious City."

Emotion swept over him. He remembered how he had once felt about that City, how he had longed to be there. He had forgotten it, but now he never would forget again. He humbly followed the man through the woodland until he was on the other path. It was a path that was straight, and headed towards the City. The trees hung over it in a canopy of brilliance, making him feel like he should be suffocating. But he was protected. The Man was there. He knew what to do, and Daniel knew He would take care of him. The Man ushered Daniel to a cliff just off to the right of the path. He could see the City and both paths from here. What Daniel saw nearly made him choke. The path he had once been on was full of people. They were all walking along, eating drinking and having fun. At the end of the wide path was a gaping chasm. None of them paid any attention to the chasm, but just kept up with pleasing themselves with their trivial games. One by one they would drop down into the pit, and their chance at making it to the City was gone. They had plunged to their deaths unaware, while enjoying the amusement on the mountain. Daniel ran as fast as he could down to the wide path. He was crying out frantically, trying to tell the people that they were walking away from the City and into a pit. But just like they had always done, everyone ignored him. He yelled and yelled until he finally broke down on the ground weeping. Why wouldnt they listen? He wasnt trying to control their lives or take away their fun, he was just trying to help. He wished he could be like the Man, the one who had so lovingly shown him the way to the City.

As he lay there sobbing, he felt a hand on his shoulder. It was a woman. She looked at him with a perplexed look.

"Whats wrong," she said, "why are you crying?"

Daniel wiped his eyes and looked up at her graciously. He looked at her with the same tender and affectionate eyes the Man had looked upon him with, and he told her about his journey. She told him her name was Abigail. He told her of how he had been walking along the same road she was on, and how he had met the Man who had cared. Daniel told her of how he looked down and saw all the people walking into the pit and how he had tried to forewarn them , but that none of them would listen. He showed her the map the Man had given him. They went to the same place where the Man had taken Daniel that day. She looked out and saw for herself what he had tried to warn the people of. It was terrible to see a second time, and Daniel broke down in tears again. Abigail joined him in crying . Then together they cried out for the Man. Daniel missed him terribly, and he wanted Abigail to meet Him too. The man came and embraced them both. He held them tightly and, and dried all of their tears. Daniel told him everything that had happened, even thought he somehow knew that the Man had always known what was going to happen to him.

"Daniel and Abigail," the Man said with his warm, sympathetic voice, "You can only try. If they dont accept the Truth that you tell them, then they are sadly going to fall into the pit. You cannot decide for them. The Owner of the City has sent me to show the way, but if they do not want to live in the City, and if they dont mind falling into the hole, then I will not force them to follow Me. It is their choice. If you two try your hardest to convince people, then He will be very happy with you when you reach the city, whether anyone listens or not. He loves you two so, as I do also. No matter where you are on the mountain, I am always there with, watching over you. Whenever you are hungry, I will feed you. Whenever you are discouraged, I will comfort you. When ever you are scared, I will hide you in my sheltering arms ."

So Daniel and Abigail walked along the path. They talked to many people along the way. Every once in a while they would find someone who would listen to them. They too would see how the end of the wide path ended, and then they would meet the Man. Every night Daniel and Abigail would call for the Man, and He would come and spend time with them. And then one day, while they were walking along the path, they felt terribly exhausted. The sat down together, intending to rest. They fell asleep on the mountain, weeping once more for all of those that wouldnt listen to the news of how they could get to the city and meet the Man. During that night, as they slept, the Man came and picked them up and carried them, just as He had done while they were sleeping so many other times. This time He carried them all the way home to the city.
